It’s spooky season once again. Like you, we here at ScissorsCut love all things Halloween, from decor to dressing up, and of course, makeup. We absolutely love the detail and lengths we can go through during this season with colour and different designs for our costumes. But we are very careful about the makeup we use.

It’s best to look for well-known brands of Halloween makeup, that are highly pigmented, so you don’t end up with a fright the next day. Skin can be very sensitive to poor-quality products.

Treat Your Skin

How should you go about preparing your skin for your Halloween plans? We’re here to help! Before and after applying heavy Halloween makeup, be sure to clean your makeup tools thoroughly, as we discussed in our previous post. The first step is to make sure to wash your face. If you have the chance to exfoliate in the days before to clean off any residue, do so.

Try not to exfoliate the same day of your party or parade. You don’t want your pores to absorb too much of your makeup due to having open pores. Moisturize your skin with your favourite moisturizer and then apply primer. We highly recommend that you use a silicone-free primer. Silicone traps bacteria, dirt, and sebum, the natural oil your skin creates.

Silicone helps heal the skin when it is damaged, but it also repels water, making the product difficult to wash off. Since you will be wearing artistic makeup, which in and of itself will be hard to wash off, it is best to find a silicone-free base. Some silicone-free primers to consider are Ilia’s True Skin Radiant Priming Serum, Lawless’ Set The Stage Hydrating Priming Serum, Elate Beauty’s Refine Mattifying Primer, or Ren Clean Skincare’s Perfect Canvas Clean Primer.

Popular Halloween Costumes

Below are some of the popular costumes you might see this year. Some have lighter makeup than others, which is perfect when gauging how much makeup you want to commit to and your skill level.

Cruella Deville

After a successful origin story film on Cruella Deville, the character has become a look that is stylish, witchy, and perfect for Halloween. She is one of many Disney villains that are perfect to emulate.

Wanda Maximoff

Wandavision was the first of a string of successful new Marvel shows on Disney +. It’s no wonder why being Wanda Maximoff this Halloween is another great choice. You don’t have to be a big Marvel fan to know that Wanda is a great costume choice.

Joker

The Joker is one of the most popular villains in the DC Universe and perhaps as beloved as Batman himself. Whether you’re a man, woman, or gender-neutral, the Joker makes for an excellent choice this Halloween.

Schuyler Sisters —Hamilton

The popular Broadway Musical, Hamilton, has made the Schuyler Sisters as much of a phenomenon as the musical itself. If you and two of your closest friends are looking for a group costume, the Schuyler Sisters is the way to go! This option allows for less makeup and a simpler look as your costume itself is the star of the night.

Snow White

Have you ever thought about taking a Disney Princess to the next level? Disney princesses are typically sweet depictions of fairy tales. Well, what about turning Snow White into a zombie with elaborate artistic makeup? If you are already well-versed with cosplay makeup, taking a sweet princess and elevating her into something more might just be the perfect costume for you.

Artistic Makeup

Halloween and cosplay makeup is unlike your everyday cosmetic products. The pigments are much more intense and are meant to make you stand out in the crowd or be seen from a stage. Artistic makeup is professional level face and body paint. There are a handful of well-known brands you can shop from to make sure you have a quality product to apply.

ScissorsCut is all about making sure you know what you’re putting on your face and body. While high pigmented products shouldn’t be an everyday occurrence, having the best brand products for this time of year is the way to go! We recommend using brands such as Mehron, Mac Cosmetics, and Ben Nye.

Happy Halloween

No matter who or what you choose to be this Halloween, we hope we’ve been able to inspire you to do something wonderful. Don’t forget to account for a mask if you will be with people outside of your bubble. But otherwise, go all out and make this Halloween one to remember.

Don’t forget to make sure you follow your nightly skincare routine once you are home! It is easy to say you’ll just wipe it off a little or fall asleep with the makeup still on after using up all your energy celebrating. Your skin and you will regret it the next day. Wash your face thoroughly and apply moisturizer before bed.

Remember you want to always do what is best for you, because when you feel good, you look good. Don’t skimp on treating your skin with the care that it deserves. Leave us a comment with what you will be dressing up as this Halloween and any ideas for our readers.
